Annie Lowengart founded Ann Lowengart Interiors in 2000, after nearly five years of working in the corporate world. Nestled just a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, CA, the ALI offices are set against the backdrop of some of California’s most stunning mountains, where natural inspiration flows.
The firm’s office contains the textbook vision boards, but it’s also filled with spreadsheets and core value statements pasted onto the walls, where delivering ‘on time and on budget’ are the most prominent ethos. Annie breaks down her process simply: “I listen to what my clients want and then, after thorough research and running numbers, I tell them exactly what it’s going to cost.” It’s about transparency, but the fact is, “When the financial stress is taken away, we can actually enjoy the creative process.”
Annie’s path to design was by no means conventional. She credits her aunt, an interior designer in the ‘70s and ‘80s, for her passion for design. “In college, I took a city planning class,” notes the University of California at Berkeley graduate. When I went home and told my father that I wanted to be an interior designer, he promptly responded, ‘I can’t support you for the rest of your life!’”
Those words stuck and for the time being, Lowengart put design in the back of her mind. But, after five years at Procter & Gamble, she found herself sketching wedding gowns in her spare time. In 1996, on a whim, she took her drawings into a bridal boutique in San Francisco, and the owner offered to make the dresses on the spot, resulting in a four year business of designing gowns. At the same time, Annie decided to remodel a property in San Francisco that pushed her firmly into design. When she sold it for a profit, she already had a line of clients, colleagues, and friends eager for her to consult with their remodels.
In 2000, Ann Lowengart Interiors was born and what started with bathrooms and kitchens remodels soon became full remodel projects. Since establishing her business, Lowengart has gained acclaim for business expertise but also for her fearless approach to color which she emphasized in her 2016 San Francisco Decorator Showcase space. It’s not always easy, she says, but “When you do what you were meant to do, you can weather the storms and setbacks of business.”
“My husband and I hired Annie to fully furnish, top to bottom, our entire home. We couldn’t be more thrilled! She and her amazing team provided concierge level service. We moved with three children to our new home in the middle of the school year. Since we were keeping our previous residence we needed everything from the kitchen being stocked with new dishes, cookware, appliances, to towels in all bathrooms. They thought of everything! The scope of this project was huge!
Annie was a great listener, always asking questions to narrow in on our taste and preferences. She got to know us so well, she was able to present items to us that we loved which made the whole process flow easily. She does have impeccable taste!
The finished product was amazing! I feel like I am on vacation in a gorgeous retreat everyday– and it’s my home! Thank you Annie!”
